Requirements for joining aviation as a career
Every country has a different requirement, and to make this transition easier for you, we have provided some basic information on what the requirements are.
Basic Requirements
CANADA
-
Applicant must be a minimum age of 17 years of age.
-
Applicant must have a valid Canadian medical certificate.
INDIA
-
The applicant must have completed his/her 10th grade and secured 50% of the grade.
-
A minimum of 17 yrs of age is required ( some schools accept enrollment at the age of 16, however, one has to be 17yrs for issue of PPL)
-
Applicant must have a Class II Medical with fitness certificate from DGCA designated medical practitioner.
KENYA
-
A minimum of 16 yrs of age is required for SPL, however, one has to be at least 17yrs to enroll into PPL.
-
Be in possession of of a valid Class II Medical Certificate.
-
Able to demonstrate the ability to read, speak, write and understand English.

FAA LICENSING
Requirements
To begin the process you firs need to meet the following requirements:

Hold a foreign PPL or CPL.
-
Hold a current Class 3 or better medical certificate.
-
Be willing and able to travel to the US.
The conversion process
Foreign License Verification
The FAA will validate your foreign license after completing an online application through the FAA website.
​
For the application, you will need to fill out and collate the following forms and documents:
​

Completed Verification of Foreign License and Medical Form (FAA Form 8060-71).
-
Copy of Foreign ICAO License.
-
Copy of Medical Certificate.
​
The FAA will contact your home country to verify that you possess a valid and current PPL.
Once complete, you will receive a Letter of Verification. This can take up to 90 days from the initial application.
You will then have 6 months to visit the US to verify your documents with a Flight Standards District Office (FSDO) Inspector or a Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE).
TCCA LICENSING
1. PPL Conversion
-
Obtaining a Canadian private pilot licence is simple if you already have an international aviation licence. You must pass a Canadian medical exam by a recognized Transport Canada aviation medical examiner as well as a written exam on Canadian air law (PSTAR exam), and a Restricted Radiotelephone Operator Certificate exam.
Canadian private pilot licence can be obtained when you make the license request, and meet the following criteria:

A minimum of 45 hours of flight
-
17 hours of dual flight and 12 hours of solo flight
-
5 hours of instrument flight with a maximum of 3 hours on a flight training device (FTD)
-
A 150 nautical mile solo navigation, which includes 2 stops.
2. CPL Conversion
To convert to a Canadian commercial licence, you must make a licence request, and meet the following criteria:
-
200 flight hours total
-
100 hours pilot in command (PIC)
-
10 hours night flying, including 5 hours dual flight and 5 hours solo flight
-
20 instrument flight hours, with a maximum of 10 hours in a flight training device (FTD)
-
20 hours of navigation, including a 300 nautical mile navigation
-
Pass the CPL written exam and a flight test
3. ATPL Conversion
To convert to a Canadian airline license, you must complete a license request, obtain a class 1 medical from a Transport Canada aviation medical examiner and meet the following criteria:

1500 hours total, including 250 hours pilot in command (co-pilot hours are recognized at 50%)
-
100 hours night flying, including 25 hours of night navigation
-
250 hours of navigation
-
75 hours of instrument flying, including a maximum of 20 hours in a flight training device (FTD)
-
Pass the ATPL written exams (SARON/SAMRA) and the IFR written exam
-
Pass the IFR flight test on a multi-engine aircraft
4. Rating Conversions of an International Licence
Canada recognizes the experienced gained abroad while still respecting the Canadian regulations with regard to minimum requirements:

Be a holder of a Canadian license
-
Obtain a Canadian medical
-
Pass the written exam (if required)
-
Pass the flight test
-
Complete the rating request form
-
Pay the fees related to the request
